Mathematics at Byron Primary School

Inspiring a Love of Mathematics

At Byron Primary School, mathematics is an integral part of our broad and balanced curriculum. We are committed to developing confident, enthusiastic mathematicians who enjoy learning and are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need for the future.

Our mathematics curriculum is carefully designed to develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills while ensuring that all pupils gain a deep and secure understanding of mathematical concepts. We believe every child can succeed in mathematics, and we provide the support and challenge needed for all learners to thrive.

Through our school values of Respect, Aspire and Succeed, we encourage children to approach mathematics with confidence, resilience and curiosity.

Our Approach to Teaching Mathematics

We use the White Rose Maths scheme as the foundation for our mathematics curriculum. This provides a carefully sequenced progression of learning, enabling pupils to build securely on prior knowledge through small, manageable learning steps.

At the start of each new unit, children revisit and consolidate previous learning before moving on to new concepts. This helps strengthen understanding and ensures important mathematical knowledge is retained over time.

Our teaching follows the recognised mastery approach, enabling pupils to develop a deep understanding of mathematics rather than simply learning procedures and methods.

Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract Learning

Children learn mathematics through a progression of:

  • Concrete experiences using practical resources and manipulatives
  • Pictorial representations such as diagrams, models and images
  • Abstract methods using mathematical symbols and formal calculations

This approach helps pupils make meaningful connections between practical experiences and mathematical concepts, supporting long-term understanding and confidence.

Across the school, our calculation policy and vocabulary progression documents ensure consistency in teaching mathematical methods and language from Year 1 to Year 6.

Developing Fluency and Number Confidence

A strong foundation in number is essential for success in mathematics.

Daily mathematics lessons begin with engaging warm-up activities that help children revisit key learning, strengthen recall and develop fluency. Teachers also use carefully planned pre-requisite questions to activate prior knowledge and identify any misconceptions before introducing new learning.

Particular emphasis is placed on:

  • Number fluency
  • Mental arithmetic
  • Efficient calculation strategies
  • Rapid recall of key facts
  • Mathematical vocabulary

By the end of Year 4, pupils are expected to confidently recall multiplication facts up to 12 × 12. To support this, pupils in Years 2 to 6 use Times Table Rock Stars, helping them build speed, accuracy and confidence in preparation for the Multiplication Tables Check.

Supporting and Challenging Every Learner

We believe that every child can be successful in mathematics.

Teachers provide carefully planned support through:

  • Scaffolding and adapted resources
  • Small-group teaching
  • Pre-teaching sessions
  • Targeted interventions
  • Ongoing feedback and guidance

For pupils who grasp concepts quickly, additional challenge is provided through:

  • Rich mathematical investigations
  • Problem-solving activities
  • Reasoning tasks
  • Deepening Understanding resources

These opportunities encourage children to think critically, explain their reasoning and apply their knowledge in a range of contexts.

Building Mathematical Understanding Over Time

The White Rose curriculum follows a spiral approach, revisiting important concepts regularly and exploring them in increasing depth as pupils move through school.

This enables children to:

  • Strengthen their understanding
  • Make connections between different areas of mathematics
  • Apply knowledge in new situations
  • Develop secure long-term learning

Particular focus is given to the key areas of:

  • Number
  • Measurement
  • Geometry
  • Statistics

Knowledge and skills are carefully sequenced so that learning builds progressively throughout each child's mathematical journey.

Mathematics Across the School

Alongside daily mathematics lessons, pupils benefit from additional opportunities to strengthen key skills:

Year 1

Focused interventions develop fundamental number sense and mathematical confidence.

Year 2

Additional fluency sessions help pupils secure number facts and calculation skills.

Upper Key Stage 2

Regular arithmetic sessions support pupils in refining formal methods, improving accuracy and increasing calculation efficiency.

Assessment in Mathematics

Assessment is an ongoing part of everyday teaching and learning.

Teachers use:

  • Observation
  • Questioning
  • Live marking
  • Verbal feedback
  • Classroom discussion

These strategies help identify misconceptions quickly and allow support to be provided when needed.

Children also complete:

  • Regular arithmetic assessments
  • End-of-unit assessments
  • Termly formal assessments

The information gathered is used to celebrate success, identify gaps in learning and plan targeted support so that every child can make strong progress.

A Successful Mathematician at Byron

By the time pupils leave Byron Primary School, we want them to be:

  • Fluent in key mathematical facts and procedures
  • Confident problem solvers
  • Skilled mathematical thinkers and reasoners
  • Resilient learners who persevere when challenged
  • Able to explain and justify their thinking
  • Prepared for the next stage of their mathematical education

Through high-quality teaching, carefully planned learning opportunities and a belief that every child can succeed, we aim to develop children who are confident, capable and enthusiastic mathematicians.
