Intent

At Byron Primary School, we believe that Physical Education plays a vital role in promoting pupils' physical health, mental wellbeing and personal development. Our PE curriculum aims to inspire all pupils to develop a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity and sport whilst building the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to lead healthy, active lives. Our curriculum promotes resilience, teamwork, determination, leadership, sportsmanship and respect, supporting pupils to become physically literate and confident movers.

The curriculum is carefully sequenced from EYFS to Year 6, enabling pupils to progressively develop competence across a broad range of physical activities, sports and disciplines. Pupils build fundamental movement skills before developing increasingly sophisticated techniques, tactics and decision-making across invasion games, net and wall games, striking and fielding, athletics, gymnastics, dance, outdoor adventurous activities and swimming.

We are committed to ensuring that every child, regardless of ability or background, can participate, achieve success and experience the positive benefits of physical activity.

Implementation

Our PE curriculum follows a carefully planned progression of knowledge and skills that enables pupils to revisit, practise and refine their learning over time. In the early years and Key Stage 1, pupils develop fundamental movement skills including balance, agility, coordination, running, jumping, throwing and catching. As pupils move through Key Stage 2, they apply these skills across a wider range of sporting activities and competitive situations.

Lessons are designed to develop both declarative knowledge (what pupils know) and procedural knowledge (what pupils can do). Pupils learn subject-specific vocabulary, rules, tactics, techniques and strategies alongside opportunities to practise, perform, evaluate and improve. They work individually, collaboratively and competitively, developing communication, leadership, problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Swimming forms an important part of the curriculum, ensuring pupils develop confidence and competence in the water while learning essential water safety skills. Outdoor adventurous activities provide opportunities for teamwork, navigation, communication and problem-solving.

Impact

By the time pupils leave Byron Primary School, they have developed the knowledge, skills and confidence to participate successfully in a wide range of physical activities and sports. They understand how exercise contributes to physical health, mental wellbeing and a healthy lifestyle.

Pupils demonstrate increasing competence, resilience and independence through physical activity. They can apply tactics, evaluate performance, work effectively as part of a team and show respect for others through competition and collaboration. They understand the importance of fair play, perseverance and personal challenge.

Our pupils leave Byron as active, confident and enthusiastic participants who are equipped with the physical literacy, knowledge and positive attitudes needed to continue enjoying sport and physical activity throughout secondary school and beyond.
