Art and Design

Intent

At Byron Primary School, we believe that every child is an artist. Our Art and Design curriculum inspires pupils to be creative, curious and confident, while developing the knowledge, skills and visual literacy needed to express their ideas and communicate meaning through art. Using the AccessArt curriculum, pupils encounter drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, sculpture, textiles, architecture, design and digital processes. We want children to explore materials, take creative risks, reflect on their work and develop an appreciation of artists, craftspeople, architects and designers from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds.

Implementation

Art and Design is taught through the AccessArt curriculum, which provides a carefully sequenced progression of knowledge and skills from Year 1 to Year 6. Pupils revisit and build upon key artistic disciplines, including drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, sculpture, design and making. Sketchbooks are central to our curriculum and provide pupils with a personal space to explore ideas, experiment with materials, record observations and reflect on their learning. Throughout their journey, pupils learn subject-specific vocabulary, investigate the work of artists and designers, and develop increasing independence in selecting materials, techniques and processes.

Impact

By the end of Year 6, pupils are confident and reflective artists who can communicate ideas through a range of media and techniques. They understand how artists, designers and craftspeople work across different cultures, time periods and disciplines, and can discuss and evaluate artwork using accurate artistic vocabulary. Pupils leave Byron with a strong foundation in artistic skills, creativity and self-expression, alongside the confidence to explore, experiment and respond thoughtfully to the world around them.
