Computing

Intent
At Byron Primary School, we want pupils to become confident, creative and responsible users of technology. Our computing curriculum develops secure knowledge and skills across the three connected areas of computer science, information technology and digital literacy. Pupils learn to design and debug programs, create digital content, manage and present information, understand how digital systems work and use technology safely, respectfully and critically. Learning is carefully sequenced so that pupils develop increasingly independent and transferable skills from Year 1 to Year 6.
Implementation
Computing is taught through the Purple Mash Computing Scheme. Pupils progressively explore coding, data handling, spreadsheets, digital media, animation, networks, artificial intelligence, 3D modelling and Python. Key knowledge, skills and vocabulary are explicitly taught and regularly revisited so that pupils remember more and confidently apply their learning.
Online safety is taught explicitly through the 2BeSafe programme and reinforced whenever pupils use technology. Pupils learn how to protect their privacy, security, identity, reputation and wellbeing, evaluate the reliability of online information and behave safely and respectfully in digital environments.
Impact
By the end of Year 6, pupils can use technology confidently, safely and purposefully. They can design, create and debug increasingly complex programs; collect, analyse and present data; select and combine appropriate digital tools; and explain how networks and online services operate. Pupils can evaluate online information critically, protect their personal information and understand their responsibilities as respectful digital citizens. They leave Byron with the knowledge, vocabulary and practical skills required for secondary education and life in an increasingly digital world.
