Intent

At Byron Primary School, we want all pupils to develop a love of languages and the confidence to communicate in another language. Through the teaching of French, pupils build their skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing while developing an understanding of French culture and the wider world. Learning is carefully sequenced so that pupils move from simple words and phrases in Year 3 to increasingly fluent conversations, extended writing and justified opinions by Year 6.

Implementation

French is taught across Key Stage 2 using the Language Angels programme. Pupils learn through songs, stories, games, conversations, reading activities and written tasks. Vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation are revisited regularly so that pupils remember more and build on prior learning. As they progress through school, children learn to ask and answer questions, express opinions, read unfamiliar language using phonics and cognates, and write increasingly independently.

Impact

By the end of Year 6, pupils can understand and communicate in French with increasing confidence. They can hold simple conversations, express opinions, read and write familiar language, and apply key grammatical structures. Pupils leave Byron with a positive attitude towards languages, an appreciation of different cultures and a secure foundation for language learning at Key Stage 3.
