British Values at Byron Primary School

At Byron Primary School, our values of Respect, Aspire and Succeed are at the heart of everything we do. We are proud to serve a diverse community and are committed to preparing children for life in modern Britain.

Through our curriculum, assemblies, pupil leadership opportunities and daily interactions, we promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

We want all pupils to develop the knowledge, confidence and understanding needed to become responsible, respectful and active citizens who make a positive contribution to their local community and wider society.

Our Commitment to the Prevent Duty

As part of our safeguarding responsibilities, Byron Primary School is committed to supporting the Government's Prevent Duty, which aims to protect children from radicalisation and extremism.

We work closely with Bradford safeguarding partners, the local authority and other agencies to ensure that children remain safe and are protected from all forms of exploitation and harm.

All staff receive regular safeguarding and Prevent training and are vigilant in recognising any signs of vulnerability that may place a child at risk of radicalisation.

Through our curriculum, assemblies and wider personal development programme, pupils learn:

  • How to think critically and question information
  • The importance of respect and tolerance
  • How to recognise and challenge prejudice and discrimination
  • The importance of keeping themselves safe
  • How to seek help and support when concerned

Working with local safeguarding partners, we regularly review our procedures and risk assessments to ensure that we continue to provide a safe environment for all pupils.

For further information about the Prevent Duty, please refer to the Government guidance and the resources available through Educate Against Hate.

British Values in Daily School Life

The promotion of British values is not confined to specific lessons. It is reflected in the daily life of the school through our values of Respect, Aspire and Succeed, positive relationships, pupil leadership opportunities, restorative approaches, celebration of diversity and our commitment to ensuring that every child feels safe, welcome and valued.

By developing these values from an early age, we help children become confident, responsible and active citizens who are well prepared for life in modern Britain and beyond.

At Byron, children learn that their views are important and that everyone has a voice.

We promote democracy through:

  • School Council elections
  • Pupil leadership roles, including Sports Leaders, Eco Team and Wellbeing Ambassadors
  • Pupil voice activities and surveys
  • Opportunities to express opinions and make choices
  • Class discussions and debates

Children learn that democratic decisions are made through discussion, listening to others and voting fairly.

Children are taught the importance of rules, responsibilities and laws in keeping everyone safe and helping communities to function effectively.

We promote the rule of law through:

  • Our behaviour policy and high expectations
  • Consistent classroom and school routines
  • Restorative approaches to behaviour
  • Assemblies and PSHE lessons
  • Visits from external agencies such as the police, fire service and other community organisations

Children learn that actions have consequences and that rules help to create a safe and positive environment for everyone.

We encourage all children to make choices, develop independence and take responsibility for their actions.

We promote individual liberty through:

  • Providing a safe and supportive learning environment
  • Encouraging children to express their views respectfully
  • Offering a wide range of clubs, enrichment opportunities and leadership roles
  • Teaching children how to stay safe both online and offline
  • Encouraging children to challenge themselves and pursue their interests and aspirations

Children learn that freedom comes with responsibility and that they have the right to make choices whilst respecting the rights of others.

Our school community is rich in diversity, and we actively celebrate and value the different cultures, faiths and backgrounds represented within our school and wider community.

We promote tolerance and understanding through:

  • Religious Education
  • Assemblies and celebrations of different faiths and cultures
  • Learning about diversity, equality and protected characteristics
  • Cultural events and themed weeks
  • Promoting respect for all individuals and communities

Children develop an understanding that while people may hold different beliefs and values, everyone deserves to be treated with respect and fairness.

Respect is one of Byron's core values and underpins everything we do.

We promote mutual respect through:

  • Positive relationships between pupils, staff and families
  • Celebrating achievements and successes
  • Teaching children to listen to and value different viewpoints
  • A strong focus on kindness, empathy and inclusion
  • Regular opportunities for collaborative learning and teamwork

Children learn to treat others with dignity, kindness and consideration, regardless of background or differences.
