Relationship and Health Education
Relationships and Health Education (RHE)
At Byron Primary School, we believe that Relationships and Health Education (RHE) plays an important role in helping children stay safe, healthy and prepared for life in modern Britain. Our aim is to develop respectful, confident and responsible young people who understand how to build positive relationships, care for their physical and mental wellbeing and make informed choices as they grow.
Following consultation with parents, carers, governors, staff and other stakeholders, we have adopted and adapted the Jigsaw RHE programme to meet the needs of our pupils and our school community. Our curriculum fully meets statutory requirements while ensuring that learning is delivered in an age-appropriate, sensitive and inclusive manner.
RHE is carefully planned and taught through a progressive curriculum from EYFS to Year 6. Learning builds over time and covers key areas including:
- Healthy relationships and friendships
- Respect, kindness and empathy
- Families and people who care for us
- Physical and mental wellbeing
- Personal safety and safeguarding
- Online safety
- Growing and changing
- Puberty and human development
- Preparing for future transitions
We recognise and celebrate the rich diversity of our school community. Lessons are taught with sensitivity and respect, creating opportunities for children to develop an understanding of different experiences, backgrounds and family structures whilst recognising the values of respect, tolerance and inclusion.
Children are encouraged to ask questions, share ideas and discuss learning in a safe and supportive environment. Through open discussion and carefully planned learning opportunities, pupils develop the confidence to seek help, keep themselves safe and build positive relationships with others.
Our RHSE curriculum supports Byron's values of Respect, Aspire and Succeed by helping pupils to:

- Understand their rights and responsibilities
- Make safe and informed choices
- Prepare for the opportunities and challenges of growing up
By the time pupils leave Byron Primary School, they have developed the knowledge, understanding and confidence needed to navigate relationships, manage change and contribute positively to their communities and wider society.
